Dr.Tom Cameron was born and grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.
He attended and graduated from Alfred University (BA, History). After college, but before attending veterinary school, he participated in a research study involving identification and treatment of brucellosis in dairy cattle. He graduated from Michigan State University (1982) with his doctorate in veterinary medicine (DVM). While there, he was awarded a National Institutes of Health NRSA pre-doctoral research fellowship and worked with Dr. Stephen Hull in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He investigated and published on heart failure and implantation of cardio-thoracic heart assist devices.
After graduation, he and his family moved to Wisconsin, accepting a staff veterinary position and later partnership in Waunakee Veterinary Services. In 1994, he set up his own practice, DeForest Veterinary Clinic, specializing in both traditional and holistic animal treatments. He is widely known in the upper mid-west for his innovative veterinary, nutritional and holistic interventions. He later received post-doctoral training (2003) in animal biosecurity, joining the certified Wisconsin Private Veterinary Corps.
In the late 1990's, he became the co-owner and head veterinarian for TimberLake Farms, Inc., a large suri alpaca farm in Oklahoma co-run with Dr. Stephen Hull.
Dr. Cameron has extensive association and committee responsibilities (brief listing: American Veterinary Medical Assn, WI Veterinary Medical Assn, Dane County Veterinary Medical Assn, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners, American Holistic Veterinary Medical Assn.). He has served on the Dane County Veterinary Ethics Board and as that association's president. More recently, he was appointed by the national Alpaca Owner Breeders Association Board of Directors to serve on their national Government and Industry Relations Committee.
Dr. Cameron has done extensive speaking and lecturing on a variety of alternative veterinary therapies. He also is a national recognized speaker on a variety of veterinary topics (large and small animal innovative therapies, alpaca veterinary, biosecurity and management issues).
Dr. Cameron lives in Waunakee, WI with his wife Patricia, who is an outreach specialist at the University of Madison, Wisconsin. They have three grown children: Peter, John and Benjamin. His hobbies include gardening, singing, hiking, tennis and gourmet cooking as well as showing alpacas at national shows.
